Buy Local First one step closer to possible alcohol sales in Precinct 2

Posted: Updated:

A group petitioning for beer and wine to be sold in stores in Tyler and Smith County Precinct 2 says they have enough signatures to be on the November ballot.

The group "Buy Local First" delivered four boxes of signed petitions to city hall Thursday afternoon.

The organization says they collected 9,100 signatures in Tyler and 7,100 in Smith County Precinct 2. The group had 60 days to petition for the signatures. As planned, they announced the results four days before the deadline.

"Now that we've delivered the petitions, the city has 30 days to certify all of the signatures and get it on the very next city council meeting," said Bob Westbrook, Buy Local First member.

This issue will be discussed at the next city council meeting July 25 and the next Smith County Commissioners Court July 24.
