Tuesday night, graveside services were held in Tyler for William "Bill" Eckel.
A so-called "Army brat," Eckel moved to Texas from Germany, and at the age of 18, joined the Navy, which would put him in the thick of fighting during the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941.
Eckel would go on to serve during the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Coral Sea.
After the war, he made a name for himself helping Pearl Harbor Survivors, eventually becoming president of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
William "Bill" Eckel was 89 years old.
