Palestine Police find hit and run victim lying in roadway

An East Texas man is hospitalized after being struck by a young man driving a pickup truck Monday night.

A Palestine Police officer came upon 51-year-old Tamayo Marcelo lying on the side of the roadway in the 2900 block of South Loop 256 just after 9 p.m. Monday.

Officials say Marcelo was struck by a pickup truck as he was walking along the shoulder with a friend.

Marcelo's friend told police the vehicle fled the scene immediately following the accident.

A second witness stated that the truck which struck Marcelo, came to a stop, and then left the scene. The second witness followed the truck to a local hospital, leading authorities to identify Colby Dwayne Sims, 22, of Fairfield, as the truck's driver.

Officers made contact with Sims, who fully cooperated with their investigation.

At this time, no arrests have been made, no other persons of interest are sought, and any additional witnesses are asked to come forward.

Marcelo was taken by ambulance to Palestine Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

Officials say he is stable, but the extent of his injuries is unknown.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Palestine Police Sergeant James Muniz at (903) 731-8477.
