Opposition rises when it comes to ETX alcohol sales

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Soon, you may be able to visit your local grocery store for beer and wine, which is something the group "Buy Local First" is fighting for.

They have set up petitions all over the city.

Bob Westbrook is the treasurer for Buy Local First.

"We've collected many more signatures than we needed because of the overwhelming support to get it on the ballot," Westbrook said.

"Buy Local First" says they have not been faced with much opposition, but that might change. The group "Stand Strong for Tyler" has just come forward and expressed their opposition to bringing alcohol sales closer to homes.

Doctor Mike Daniels is the pastor at Landmark Baptist Church in Tyler and is heading up this campaign.

"There is no record were someone can come up and say, 'Hey, alcohol saved my life. Oh, alcohol is the greatest thing that ever came to me; I just can't life without it. It blesses me so much.' No, you've got AA, Celebrate Recoveries all over our town already. Our nation is in a mess because of alcohol," Dr. Daniels said.

Buy Local First said allowing these alcohol sales will bring in the dollars.

"When you think, 'Holy cow, what would the sales tax revenue be to the city of Tyler if we could capture that beer and wine sales?" Westbrook said.

However, a local pastor has a different standpoint. Doug Anderson pastors for Rose Heights Church in Tyler.

"It's all about the dollar after all, isn't it? Well, I contend that for every dollar that they spend or make on alcohol they will spend a dollar and half for rehab and other programs to try to pick up the pieces of devastated lives," said Anderson.

The message of Stand Strong for Tyler is simple.

"So today, we intend to stop it," Daniels said.

If there are enough signatures to put this on November's ballot then the decision will rest in the hands of the voters.
