What's Working: Fairfield church making mats for the homeless

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) -

Members at Covenant Community Church in Fairfield have found a unique and inexpensive way to help the homeless get a better night sleep.

Two years ago the church began a community outreach project to make sleeping mats for the homeless out of recyclable plastic grocery bags.

"It's very springy. It's all plastic so it doesn't absorb moisture and doesn't get wet and drys out really quick," said Charles Garrison, whose been making the mats since February.

It takes about 20 to 30 hours to make each mat and nearly 700 plastic bags.

"We are using things we usually throw away and it's something easy to do," said Barb Martin, church member.

"Lot of these folks are sleeping on the ground or finding a concrete bench somewhere and we are giving them something," said Garrison.

The finished mats go to the New Life Baptist Mission in Hamilton, and the mission says the need for the mats is growing.

"We are trying to export the idea because we can't make enough to fill the need," said Garrison. "But if you have a lot of folks doing it, all it costs is time."

In two years the church has donated about 45 sleeping mats to the homeless community in Hamilton.
