An East Texas man convicted of murder nearly 12 years ago, has been put to death.
Governor Rick Perry denied the last minute appeal for commutation of sentence or a stay of execution for Kelsey Patterson. Patterson was convicted for fatally shooting Louis Oates, owner of Oates Oil Company in Palestine, and secretary Dorthy Kay Harris, back in 1992.
Since then, lawyers have argued Patterson is mentally retarded and should not be put to death. On Monday, the board of pardons and paroles recommended the governor either commute the sentence to life or grant a 120 day reprieve. Patterson had been legally diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic.
Patterson spent more than a decade on Texas death row.
