YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -
A high school teacher in York County is under investigation after he is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teen student, who later got pregnant.
According to York County Sheriff's Office report, investigators were tipped off in February 2012 that 33-year-old Jabari Ali Patton, may have been involved in "inappropriate contact" or relationship with a student at York Comprehensive High School.
An arrest warrant issued against Patton on Tuesday stated that he carried on a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl who was a student in his Masonry Class during March 2011.
According to the warrant, Patton and the teen girl had sex in his car along a dirt road off Highway 161.
According to investigators, the now 18-year-old female later got pregnant and recently delivered her baby. Investigators believe Patton is the father, but they are working to confirm the paternity of the baby.
WBTV was at the Sheriff's Office on Wednesday morning when Patton, accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in for charges of sexual battery with a student 16 or 17 years of age, no aggravated force or coercion.
Patton was named as the head varsity basketball coach for the YCHS team, last year. He had previously served as an assistant varsity coach since the 2005 basketball season.
The school district's superintendent says Patton was confronted on May 17th about the accusations and he immediately resigned from the school district.
"Mr. Patton made his decision to resign after the district informed him on that same day that the District had received a report that Mr. Patton had been involved in a sexual relationship with a district student who is currently 18 years old," a school district statement read.
"Upon learning that a recent state law makes it unlawful for a high school employee to be involved in a sexual relationship with a student, regardless of the student's age, the district reported this matter to law enforcement for further investigation and follow-up."
Patton's attorney is Reggie Lloyd, the former head of South Carolinas State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
