WEB EXCLUSIVE: LA shooting academy teaches kids gun safety

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Overcast skies couldn't keep little rangers from hitting the gun range Saturday as the 'Little Rangers Shooting Academy' took place at the Lake Charles Gun Club.

"We're just giving everybody the opportunity to come out here, have fun, give some prizes away and learn about gun safety" said Little Rangers event director, Paul Glasco.

Sanctioned by the National Rifle Association as 'NRA Youth Day' lake area kids were able to learn the basics of gun use and safety.

"We're basically trying to teach respect to guns, confidence around guns and of course safety around" said Glasco.  "Guns here and some rules around the house as far as gun safety goes" he added.@

With southwest Louisiana being a prime place for outdoor activity and premiere hunting, Glasco says learning gun handling and prevention skills are important, for all kids.

"We want to teach our youth of the enjoyment we have of guns whether it's sports shooting, clay shooting or even hunting for that matter" said Glasco.  "We live in southwest Louisiana where pretty much everybody hunts and does something outdoors" he said.

"I learned that if you're not shooting and if you're not shooting you should keep your gun down or keep it on what you're shooting at" said Little Rangers participant, Taylor Cook.  "And don't point it at yourself... when you're not shooting, keep it in safety" she said.

Louisiana State Police and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office were there to enforce the importance of gun safety.

"The earlier that we can teach these kids about the importance of gun safety the earlier we can ensure they're safe when they're around firearms" said Louisiana Police Sergeant, James Anderson.

Glasco says that there is already another youth shooting event scheduled for December with the possibility of adding two more.
