Longview hosts summer boat show

Boating is big on East Texas lakes and rivers and an annual show in Longview is hoping to give boat sales a summer shot in the arm. The latest models of recreation and fishing boats are on display at Maude Cobb.

"We've assembled this show this time of year to showcase our most popular models and to get people ready for the summer boating season," says Jeff Gage of Plano Marine.

Pontoon boats are the big sell this year, with many sporting everything from kitchen and bath to iPhone and iPod ports.

"Like your living room into a boat. I just like the roominess and the shade factor so you're not burning up in the sun," says visitor Susan Steddum.

"Some of these things look like tour buses for the water this is the way a superstar would travel," said visitor Brandon Michael.

But customers are not only looking for luxury. With gas prices what they are, they're looking for fuel economy.

"A lot of our boats carry the new four-stroke engines which are straight fuel no more mixing your oil and gas like the old days its also more fuel efficient," Gage says.

There are varying price ranges for varying levels of comfort. And boat sales are on the rise.

"People used to take one vacation a year have to save up for it. Now what we're finding nowadays is people buying something like a boat, and vacation every weekend," says Gage.

The boat show continues at Maude Cobb activity center , 9-a.m. to 8-p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5-p.pm.Sunday. Admission is free.
