Tyler art gallery using small canvases to raise big funds

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Our local art galleries throughout East Texas provide us all hours of enjoyment, thanks to the local artists who participate in their shows.

But it costs money to produce those shows, and one East Texas gallery is taking a new approach to fundraising.

Tyler's Gallery Main Street -- located at 110 West Erwin Street -- is taking a popular idea embraced by galleries and nonprofits nationwide and bringing it to East Texas. They're turning to the public, and to these tiny 6x6 canvases, to raise money.

"We give anyone who wants to participate a 6x6 piece of canvas," said Beverly Abell, Department Leader of the City of Tyler's Main Street Department. "It's then the artist's job to go and paint on this canvas or attach a 6x6 watercolor or even a 6x6 3D piece to this canvas. We in turn will accept that work back."

The canvases will be on exhibit in September, where gallery officials hope they'll all sell for $20 a piece.

"Our goal is to have 500 works of art from artists locally, nationally and internationally up on our walls available to purchase," Abell said.

They hope to raise $10,000 to continue running the gallery -- producing an original show every six weeks and sponsoring quarterly art walks.

The response so far has been encouraging.

"Artists who have never shown in this gallery -- budding artists, young artists are calling and saying, hey, can I have one or more of those 6x6 canvases?" Abell said. "Now it's spreading to Dallas and to Austin and artists are calling us from those communities, and we are mailing out canvases to them."

And Abell wants people to know, you don't have to be an artist of any sort to participate.

"This is your opportunity if you've wanted to dabble in the arts, if you've wanted to express that artistic side of yourself, now's your time, because we want everyone to participate in this," she said.

If you'd like a canvas, there are a couple of ways to get one. You can call the gallery at 903-593-6905, or you can email them at gallerymainstreet@tylertexas.com.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
