It's lunchtime, you left your debit card at the house, and all you have is a crumpled five dollar bill in your pocket. Surely that isn't enough to cover a main course, a side and a drink; or is it?
Yes, it is enough for lunch, and I'm going to prove it.
Let's take that crumpled five challenge.
Rusty Taco at Fifth and Beckham just opened up for business in Tyler. Racing inside to beat the lunch rush, I notice over twenty different lunch tacos for only $2 each, but can they meet the Cheap Eats Challenge?
David Weaver, owner of Rusty Tacos, said "You can get a taco, chips and hot sauce and a drink for…"
Wait a minute. Saying the price is my job, David: $4.97.
Okay, we've spent a lot of time in Tyler, lately. Let's go to Longview.
Uncle Joe's Pizza and Pasta at 411 North Spur 63 has some advice right up front: Never tell anybody outside the family what you are thinking again. That's the quote on the Marlon Brando poster hanging behind the counter. That's good advice, so I'll tell them how I'm feeling: hungry. They serve up a little spaghetti, or a slice of pizza, with a couple rolls and a drink for $4.98.
Right across the street at 408A Spur 63 is Mi Casita. They serve up a good-sized breakfast taco, plus chips with all kinds of different salsa.
"We have our regular sauce, our green sauce, our chipotle, and our pineapple habanera sauce," said Brandi Bonney, employee of Mi Casita.
Watch it; the pineapple stuff is crazy hot. They throw in an o.j. until 11 a.m. for only $4.42. After that you can make it a lunch taco for less. I'll tell you about that in a minute.
Heading north we find Box Car Barbeque at the corner of Gilmer Road and Blue Ridge Parkway. You get a big old sloppy Joe, chips and a drink for only $4.64.
A little farther north another Cheap Eats lurks in a convenience Store: Lone Star Number Seven is home to Tacos Goyo at the corner of Gilmer Road and Hawkins. They serve up a good-sized burrito, chips with salsa and a thirst quencher for only $3.94, including tax.
That sounds like the cheapest Cheap Eats, but remember Mi Casita across town? That lunch taco, chips, multi salsa and drink is only $3.66.
So you can have your Cheap Eats, and still have a crumpled up a dollar in your pocket.
There are two more locations we didn't tell you about on KLTV 7 news. At the main Taco Goyo location at 717 East Highway 31 they have several single items with chips and salsa and a drink for less than five dollars.
And right next to Box Car Barbeque at Gilmer Road and Blue Ridge Parkway is Jimmy's Donuts. You can get a breakfast croissant and a small kolache with a canned drink for only $4.10, but they're only open until noon, so get there early.
