'It's never too late'

Literacy Council of Tyler, in a partnership with Tyler Junior College, hosted graduation ceremonies for adult students receiving their GED diploma Thursday evening.

The ceremony took place at 6 p.m. in Wagstaff Gym on the TJC campus.

Students of all ages received their diploma in the ceremony described as "inspiring" LCOT executive director, Nancy Crawford.

"Everyone who attends this graduation says it's the highlight of their year. It is very inspiring to watch these adults receive their GED. They have worked diligently for months and, in many cases, years to achieve this goal," Crawford said.

The oldest graduate to receive his diploma was Timothy Mcfadden. In his mid-fifties, Mcfadden said he always knew he would one day have his diploma.

"It took a lot of work but I'm glad I accomplished it. I knew from the beginning when I started this GED course that I wasn't going to stop until I did it. I mean, life is just what you make it," Mcfadden said.

Crawford said the opportunities are endless for these new graduates.

"Better employment opportunities will exist for each one of these students now. This accomplishment will truly change their lives and the lives of their families," Crawford said.
