NEW BOSTON, TX (KLTV)- The movie "Bernie" is based on an East Texas murder and is scheduled to open in local theatres in two weeks.
It centers around Bernie Tiede, who admitted to killing Marjorie Nugent in Carthage back in 1998.
Tiede is currently serving a life sentence in the Barry Telford Prison Unit in New Boston, Texas. New Boston is about 100 miles north of Carthage.
East Texans who are actually in the movie are excited to soon see themselves on the big screen.
"When I found out they were going to do a movie about it, and they wanted East Texans to play some of the gossip roles; I thought, 'I can go to a casting call. I can do that,'" Carol Biggs says.
Biggs is one of many extras in the movie. She says her days on the set left her with the acting bug.
"One day, I sat about three feet away from Matthew McConaughey for about two or three hours and that was quite fun. I really enjoyed that because I looked at him quite a bit," she says.
Other East Texans in the movie, like Travis Blevins, had the chance to see it already.
"I had a small part in it and it's in the very end. It turned out right. It turned out good," Blevins says.
But, the man who the whole movie is about hasn't seen a thing.
"I don't get to see the movie yet. Our warden hasn't made a decision yet as far as letting me see it. But, I would love to. That's my life and I want to see what they're saying.
The murder movie has been written as a dark comedy, but people who were on the set insist it's made with the best intentions.
"It does not make fun. That's not the purpose," Biggs says.
"It doesn't do anything for me. I'm not this big egomaniac. That doesn't thrill me to see all of that happen. A matter of fact, it has taken me a long time to get used to all of this," says Tiede.
Tiede is cautious when it comes to talking about the actual movie. He says he honestly doesn't know much about it.
"It'll be alright. We'll write a book sometime, and the book ought to be really accurate because I want to take part in that," says Tiede.
Tiede must serve 15 more years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Thursday night at 10, Bernie Tiede talks about meeting the movie star, Jack Black, and writing letters to Shirley MacClain while the actors were researching their roles.
