Max McCormick has seen a a lot of changes in agriculture education during his 27 years of teaching at New Summerfield High School. Originally called a vocational agriculture teacher, he now goes by the title of agriculture science teacher, which he says is a better fit because he teaches so much science in his classes. But whichever title this longtime teacher has gone by, his impressive list of top awards attest to his success over the years.
Max, as he's called by faculty and students, teaches classes in plant science, animal science, ag mechanics, leadership and agri business. Classes in subjects like forestry are often held in forests in addition to the classroom. Max feels that how he teaches is as important as what he teaches. He feels that each student should get equal opportunities. Although Max can be a tough taskmaster, he refuses to show favoritism. His theory must work since he constantly has former students visit and most say his influence continues in their lives.
