Texas College Holds 110th Commencement

They spent years working towards it, now a group of students in Tyler can call themselves college graduates.

Texas College held it's 110th commencement ceremonies at Caldwell Auditorium Saturday. Family and friends of the more than 100 graduates filled the seats of the auditorium.

One of the highlights of the day was keynote speaker Alphonso Jackson. Jackson serves as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Bush Administration.

His speech revolved around what the students can do in the future, but beforehand he talked about a topic that hits close to home for many East Texans, a possible change in the way people receive money for housing. Jackson said the program that's in existence now, must be modified.

"Over the last 5 years, especially in the section A program, it's grown extensively at about 10 % a year, Congress has told us it can't continue to grow and we had to put a cap on it, it's not a cut and I want to make that very clear, we're capping the program and that's different than cutting the program."

Jackson said those who are currently receiving assistance through the section A program will not be affected.
