WEB EXCLUSIVE: City bans plastic shopping bags

KHNL - No more "paper or plastic" on Oahu. Honolulu has now joined the other three counties in regulating plastic shopping bags.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle signed Bill 10 into law, effectively banning the plastic bags you get from supermarkets, convenience stores and restaurants.

The ban won't take effect until July 2015. Supporters of the new law said it will allow stores time to get rid of current inventory. Carlisle also said it would allow consumers time to change their behavior when they go shopping.

"We hope people are going to understand that between now and 2015 we're going to be hoping that more and more of them are going to be bringing their own bags to the grocery stores, reducing the problem that plastic bags are already causing," said Carlisle.

The measure was introduced by city council member Tulsi Gabbard, who attended the bill signing, and council chair Ernie Martin.
