Officer Injured in Morning Chase

A Tyler motorcycle officer was injured Tuesday, after being hit by a car he was trying to pull over. It happened around 10 a.m. outside a home on Rudman St. in South Tyler.

Officer Patrick Mullican was attempting to stop a car that had run a stop sign at Sunnybrook and Fair. The driver pulled into a private driveway, bailed from the car, and left it to roll into the officer who was directly behind him.

The man took off running to the rear of the home, scaling a wall, before being caught by police a few blocks away.

Officer Mullican said he was somewhat surprised by the incident.

"At first it seemed like an ordinary stop, but when he kept stopping and looking for a place to stop he then passed up several opportunities to stop I was beginning to wonder what was going on."

The driver of the car has been identified as 22-year-old Alfonzo Lamar. He's being held in the Smith County Jail, charged with ggravated assault on a public servant and evading arrest.  He also has 27 outstanding warrants.

Officer Mullican made it out of the incident with only a small cut on his nose.
