Chemical Spill Forces Shutdown of I-30

A huge chemical spill shuts down part of Interstate 30 Friday. It happened around 5:30 A.M. at mile marker 139, that's near the Saltillo exit, about 10 miles West of Mount Vernon.

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said an 18-wheeler carrying 5,500 gal. of isopropyl alcohol crashed on the Eastbound side of the interstate. The truck caught on fire. Firefighters were able to put the fire out with minimal damage.

The crash shutdown both sides of the interstate for a majority of the day. 17 people had to be treated for injuries due to breathing the toxic chemical, and a local school had to be evacuated.

The Westbound lanes of the interstate were opened in the afternoon, but DPS said it could be late friday night before the eastbound lanes are opened.
