Del Barnes to play at Cornell

HENDERSON, TEXAS (KLTV) - When national signing day arrived in February hundreds of East Texas athletes signed on for the college futures.

Del Barnes was not one of them.

Trying to decide which fit was best for him, Barnes has now decided where he will go.

Barnes will take his talent to Cornell.

Yes, that Cornell, of the Ivy League.

"I want to go to law school and be a lawyer," said Barnes in an interview with KLTV in the Fall, "I think that would be a good choice for me."

The Henderson quarterback, according to his head coach Dickey Meeks, made the decision last night.

According to reports, Barnes had numerous offers from schools to play football and reportedly had several offeres for his academic prowess.

Barnes is the valedictorian of his graduating class.

"I just wanted to stay away from the stereotypical image of a quarterback," Barnes said, "And to do what I need to do in the classroom, I have strong motivation from my parents and staying on track and doing the best I can with whatever I put my mind two."

Barnes was the MVP of the 2010 3A Division I Championship game, throwing two touchdowns, leading Henderson to the state title.

He led Henderson to the state semi-finals last season.

With the smallest enrollment in District 17-5A, and really across the entire classification, Lindale could use that as an excuse for a sub-par season. But under defensive coordinator, turned head coach Chris Cochran, that won't be the case.
