Officials Kickoff "A Day To End Sexual Violence"

April 20th is "A Day to End Sexual Violence."

Local law enforcement joined efforts today to get the word out.

Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith, Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle and D.A. Matt Bingham tied teal ribbons on law enforcement cars.

Tomorrow, the East Texas Crisis center will distribute the same ribbons and sexual assault information to students on East Texas college campuses.

Joan Ford of the East Texas Crisis Center says it is important to reach college students.

"That's particularly important because the population between 16 and 24 is the greatest at risk population, so we felt it was particularly important to be there and increasing awareness for those folks," she says.

Fourteen other local agencies including Mother Frances Hospital and East Texas Medical Center are participating in tomorrow's events and providing residents with teal ribbons.
