Repairs Cause Slowdown On I-20

Slower than normal speeds greeted drivers on I-20 in Gregg County Monday.

Repairs are underway on a bridge at Farm-to-Market road 2207, damaged Thursday in an accident. An 18-wheeler lost a steel girder it was hauling. The girder smashed into support columns causing the bridge to nearly collapse.

Both lanes had to be closed down Thursday, but following some temporary repairs The Texas Department of Transportation decided to re-open them this weekend.

For safety reasons, the speed limit was dropped down to 55 mph, 15 miles under the regular limit. Officials are warning drivers to slow down.

"A lot of people don't realize that they're coming up on a work zone until they're in it," said Delaina Mayer-Pipes,public information specialist,Tyler district. "We try to do everything we can to let them know ahead of time that there is a work zone coming up they do need to slow down, they do need watch for workers and equipment but again it's up to the drivers to watch out for those signs and slow down."

Speeding through the work zone can be expensive. During work times fines double, meaning the cheapest ticket could cost you $400. TXDOT officials expect to keep the speed limit at 55 mph, until the bridge is repaired. They hope to have those repairs completed by Memorial day.
