I-20 Shutdown Due to Accident

Drivers heading through Gregg County on Interstate 20 Friday experienced major delays and traffic headaches. Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation said relief could come Saturday.

A 3 1/2 mile stretch of the Westbound interstate was shut down Thursday afternoon after 18-wheeler hauling a steel girder lost it's load, sending the girder slamming into a bridge support at Farm-to-Market road 2207. The girder smashed into the support column about halfway up, breaking it almost in half.

The force of the impact shifted the bridge causing it to crack in some places. TXDOT officials said there is still some work to do to make the bridge safe. Longview Bridge and Road was contracted to firm up the bridge.

The company intends to use four separate supports to hold up the more than 500-thousand pounds of concrete. They hope to have the inside lane of traffic open by noon Saturday. Permanent repairs could take a while longer. Officials said those may not be completed until Memorial Day.
