Rush says move to Oak Ridge was all about family

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Dereck Rush said his goodbyes to Tyler ISD Wednesday morning, before leaving for Conroe.

After spending nine years at John Tyler, Rush is making the move to Oak Ridge High School.  Rush will be head football coach and campus athletic director.  He's excited about the return to Class 5A football, and joining a growing community.

"They (Oak Ridge High School) are projected in two years to be bigger than the The Woodlands." said Rush.  "I'm in control of the middle schools and another middle school is being built as we speak. I have full control of 48 coaches and I get to hire and place coaches where I want."

Many have wondered why Rush would leave a program he's put in position to win big in 2012.  Rush says on paper the John Tyler Lions will be a state championship team next season.  But with a wife and two young daughters, including one set to start elementary school next year, Rush says he'll always put his family first.

"It's going to be a better situation overall in the long run for my family," said Rush.  "It's probably one of the hardest things I've had to do since my mom died my senior year in high school. We have to move on. John Tyler is going to keep on winning football games and hopefully we can get Oak Ridge turned around."

Tyler ISD athletic director Rod Kaspar says he had already received several calls about the John Tyler position.  The job will be posted until May 1.  Kaspar will look at the current John Tyler staff, but won't necessarily keep the job in house.

"We've lost not only a great football coach, but a great member of the community," said Kaspar.  "He's (Coach Rush) leaving some big shoes to fill. We can't just go out and make a hasty decision on a big important decision as this."

Kaspar says he has not named an interim coach, but John Tyler will have spring football without a head coach.
