TISD Receives $445,000 for Arts

The Tyler ISD board just approved nearly half-a-million dollars in funds to go toward the district's arts programs. Some schools will soon replace old tile or concrete dance floors with new wood floors. And band programs will get new instruments to replace old ones that teachers say are falling apart. They say some students are having to share instruments because there are not enough for everyone.

"For instance, at Robert E. Lee, they have 14 tuba players. Well, they only have nine tubas or 10," George Faber, director of Visual and Performing Arts at TISD, said. "Well, there are three or four students that do not have instruments. Some of the band directors are still using some of those instruments I used, which makes some of the instruments 15, 20, 30 years old. They're keeping them together with paper clips, rubber bands, whatever they got to do to make sure these horns stay together and continue to play."

TISD will also be remodeling theater facilities and purchasing new art supplies. The district says the funds will go a long way toward improving its performing and visual arts programs.
