ETX Community comes together to recognize child abuse

Posted: Updated:
WOOD COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

April is National Child Abuse Awareness month.

Friday, Wood County hosted an event to inform residents of the child abuse that is taking place right in their own community.

Residents gathered at Governor Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman, to attend the annual event.

Georgia Cameron, The Wood County Child Welfare Board President, said more than 80 Wood County children have been placed in foster care just in the last month.

Cameron, who is a foster parent, said several children are placed out of the region because there are not enough foster parents and adoptive families in the area.

The event focused on not only protecting victims, but preventing abuse as well.

The community lit lanterns in honor of children who have faced abuse in their lifetime.
