Tips to ease the pain at the pump

Keeping up with your vehicle's maintenance can help you get better gas mileage.

Checking up on your fuel filter is one way to get better mileage for your dollar. If your filter is clogged, you have a problem.

"Your pump is having to work harder not only to pump the fuel through, it's not gonna get adequate fuel pressure to your engine. Thus, your engine's gonna work harder. Thus, your fuel economy's gonna drop," said Robert Russell with Engines Express.

Russell says it usually costs around $50 to replace your filter. That's the cost for a tank of gas in many vehicles.

Also, check your spark plugs.

"Wore out spark plugs can decrease your fuel economy as well," said Russell.

Russell also advises to keep your tire pressure at the optimum level.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated. If there's not enough pressure, there will be more resistance on the ground. This can negatively affect your gas mileage.

Russell also recommends only using your air conditioner when necessary.
