Who should you trust with your storm damage?

While we did not see anything close to the widespread damage in and around Dallas, some of you might be looking for help fixing the damage the hail and falling trees left behind on your property. However, there are some things you should look out for before you hire anyone.

Mechele Mills is the President of the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas. She told us anytime there is a bad storm in a particular area, you have what she calls storm chasers who, "come in from out of town and try to take advantage of those who have been affected by the storm."

Mills said these storm chasers typically go door to door advertising their work at a discounted price.

Mills said anything that sounds too good to be true, usually is. Wyley Smith owns Coyote Roofing in Tyler, and says he often finds himself cleaning up the mess the storm chasers left behind.

"It's fairly common after a hail storm scenario is over and the out of towners all go home," he said.

From a distance, Smith said the jobs can look pretty good, but often times there are leaks.

"So, the local contractors always step up and take care of the local people and make sure they have a good roof after all," Smith said.

The BBB told us about a few red flags to watch out for. The first is signage on the company's vehicle; an unmarked vehicle is a red flag. Also look for a local telephone number and address.

"Another thing these people do is they'll use high pressure sales tactics. They want to create some urgency; they want the money now, they want you to sign the contract today," Mills warned.

"A good company with a good credit rating does not need any money up front to start the job. If we do insurance claims, we work the insurance claim for the people," Smith explained.

"Our home is our greatest investment so we want the best job done," he said.

Smith told us the best jobs are done by reputable local companies that are accredited by the BBB.
