Eight-year-old girl left on school bus

An eight-year-old girl was left sleeping on a school bus Thursday morning.

The Chandler Elementary second grader was found on the bus in the Brownsboro ISD bus barn.

Brownsboro ISD Superintendent Christopher Moran says she was only on the bus a few minutes before waking up.

"Any parent has the right to be upset," said Moran, "The district acknowledges that a procedure was not followed this morning."
Moran says the driver was immediately suspended Thursday morning.

The girl's mother, who didn't want to go on camera, says her daughter woke up alone at the Brownsboro ISD bus barn. The district's transportation director drove the child back to her school Thursday morning.

"My message to the mom-- and I would say on camera to the student that how very sorry I am that this occurred, and I apologize on behalf of the district," said Moran. "Again, the bus driver did not follow procedure."

The district has a policy that at the end of each bus route, the driver walk to the back of the bus to make sure every student is off. After double checking, the transportation director says the driver pushes a button, signaling all students are off safely.

Moran says Thursday morning, that button was pushed before the driver ever checked to see if all the students were off. He says he's thankful the student was quickly found.

"Had we followed the procedure, this would not have occurred, but my message to mom by phone this morning was that she has a right to be upset," said Moran.

The child's mother says she plans on driving her daughter to school for a while. Moran says they'll investigate to determine the driver's employment status with the district.

Last week, a Chandler Elementary second grader took a hall pass and then decided to walk-off campus down to a grocery store.  He was found almost an hour later by campus police.

That student was suspended for two days, and then had in school suspension for two days.
