Trayvon Martin cartoon ignites controversy on UT campus

AUSTIN, TX (KVUE) - A political cartoon on the Trayvon Martin shooting is now erupting into controversy on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

On Tuesday, a cartoon about the Martin case appeared in the student newspaper, the Daily Texan.

The illustration shows a woman in a chair reading from a book called "Trayvon Martin and the Case of Yellow Journalism."

In the cartoon, the woman tells a child, quote, "and then the big bad white man killed the handsome, sweet, innocent 'colored' boy."

That cartoon now has several students calling for the cartoonist to be punished.

The Daily Texan released a statement, saying "the Editorial Board recognizes the sensitive nature of the cartoon's subject matter. The views expressed in that cartoon are those of the artist. It is the policy of the Editorial Board to publish the views of our cartoonists and columnists, even if we disagree with them."
