Teacher donates kidney to student's dad

DALLAS, TX (CNN) - A kindergarten teacher in Texas has changed the life of one of her students. She gave the little boy's dad a kidney to help save his life.

Teresa Woodard spent time with them all the day before the surgery.

Marshall Smith's kidneys are failing. His arm holds deep scars, from two years of dialysis: three times, every week.

This 50-year-old father to five-year-old Sean didn't have much hope, until Sean got Mrs. Marie Bell for a teacher.

Tuesday afternoon, inside Dallas' Baylor hospital, Mrs. Bell gave Sean's daddy a kidney.

This all started with Sean being tardy to kindergarten. His mom wrote a note and the excuse was, his dad was in the hospital. When Mrs. Bell read that, she started asking questions."

On the eve of the transplant, Marie Bell remembered that note; the sorrow she felt when she read it. The elation she felt when she discovered, she was a perfect match.

Family members say everyone is resting comfortably.
