WEB EXCLUSIVE: Local church sign turning heads

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Some are calling the giant evicted sign in front of Barefoot Church shocking. The banner has people in the community doing a double take.

Barefoot Church is located along Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, right next to two busy shopping centers. According to a statement released by a pastor with the church, the sign is part of the church's Easter theme, using a play on the words. Put plainly, the message is encouraging people take the ‘bad' out of their lives.

Whether the message is clear to passersby or not, people in the community say the sign made them do a double take.

"When we pulled up to the parking lot, we were like ‘uh oh, what's going on now?'" said Barb Foster.

"It caught my eye as soon as we came around the bend," said another local, Grace Baker.

Some say they were taken aback and feel there are better approaches to reach people.

"Easter is a victorious time because it's when Christ arose from the grave. So, maybe something more in the line that there's a victory that's been won, rather than sounding like something horrible has happened," said Marsha Wehr who frequent the shopping center next door.

Dana Mc Knight attends Barefoot Church regularly, and she says she gets it and thinks the sign will do the trick. "It's very 21st century. I understand from the inside, so I understand that they are using the word hell for the bad that it represents, but meaning the bad in one's life and the issues that people have."

According to the statement released by Barefoot Church,  they expect about 7,000 people to attend their Easter Services to hear what the sign is really all about.
