Trinity Valley playing for former coach

ATHENS, TEXAS (KLTV) - For Trinity Valley their 5th straight trip to the national tournament is different.

It's a high point on a season that started so low.

"It has been a very difficult year, difficult for our players for our program for my wife," said co-head coach Michael Landers, "Because she played for Kurt and worked with him and Miranda."

As the year was starting, the father of the Trinity Valley program, Kurt Budke and his assistant, former Lady Card Miranda Serna, were killed in a plane crash in Arkansas

"It was a tough time for us," said co-head coach Kenya Landers, "We dedicated our season to Coach Budke and miranda and we will never forget them."

"It is something that will always stick with us, because he was the one who started this," said sophomore Jenae Barrett, "I think we should do this for them I think we owe them something."

Now get the chance to pay coach Budke back.

The national championship game in Salina Kansas, will be played on Kurt Budke court.

"In a pefect world, Kurt Budke's team the Lady Cards will be the first to play on Kurt Budke Court that night" said Micheal Landers, "And we are going to do everything we can to make that happen."

"Obviously that gives us a little more fire and motivation to go up to Kansas and bring back a national championship trophy," said Kenya Landers.

And while they look for a title to honor the founder of the Lady Card family, co-head coaches Micheal and Kenya Landers will soon be adding to their own.

Kenya is due to give birth to the couples 2nd child after the tournament.

"It would be the culmination of an unbeleiveable year, to have the success we have had here as a program, to win a national championship and to become a father for the 2nd time, I would be absolutely speechless."

The Lady Cards are leaving for Kansas on Sunday.

They play Malcolm X College in the first round on Tuesday.
