Wreck Kills Two, Injures Five

The accident happened on Hwy 64, just west of Canton. All seven people are from Wills Point, a town just northwest of there. Three of those involved in the wreck were co-workers carpooling home from work at the telemarketing firm Winning Strategies, in Canton.

One witness, Doris Chester, said: "It's the worst I ever seen. It was real bad, real bad."

25-year-old Daniel Carrillo and one of his passengers, 20-year-old Valerie Phillips, died in the wreck. Troopers say Carrillo tried to pass in a no-passing zone, when he hit an oncoming car in the opposite lane. DPS troopers say Carrillo and Phillips were not wearing their seat belts. The third passenger, Paul Mills, was wearing his seat belt, and he survived the crash.

"I know a lot of people don't like to wear a seat belt," Charles Mills, Paul Mills' brother, said. "But it is a good law."

Charles Mills sympathizes with the families who lost their loved ones: "I'm the fortunate one. I've got a brother to go see. There are two people that died in this wreck. And their families, they can't go see them."

Others sent to the hospital with various injuries include all four people in the other car: a young married couple, their three-year-old child and six-month-old infant. This morning, the owner of Tommy's Towing Service in Canton discovered the family's dog left bleeding in the car. He took the puppy to the vet, where it is being treated for head injuries.

Paul Mills is still in critical condition tonight. Due to patient privacy laws, we are not able to find out the conditions of the four people in the other car. A third car was involved in the crash, but no one in that vehicle was injured.
