WEB EXCLUSIVE: Flash Mob with a message stuns shoppers at Target

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - It seemed like a normal night of shopping at Target in D'Iberville, until some United Way "alternative spring breakers" shocked shoppers.

The young people from colleges across the country came to south Mississippi to do service projects all week.  But, on a free night away from the hard labor, they did something else, something completely unexpected.

One young lady pushing a shopping cart said, "I was wondering what the heck was going on!"

The shoppers got some unexpected entertainment when the alternative spring breakers started a flash mob with a message.

Brian Mezzi of United Way of South Mississippi explains, "You'll see a lot of flash mobs on TV or on You Tube and there are synchronized dances with large groups of people in public places out of nowhere. At United Way it's sort of a statement mob, a flash mob that freezes for two-and-a-half minutes."

That's just long enough for this group of 58 alternative spring breakers from 30 colleges in 23 states to get out a very important message, to "Live United".

Mezzi said, "They don't give up their bathing suits, they trade in their swim suits for tool belts we say and he give back to our communities in south Mississippi."

Working at different service projects and agencies throughout the week, they suddenly stood frozen with matching T-shirts and silly props like plastic swords and straw hats. This show of solidarity stopped shoppers in their tracks.

It certainly left an impression on cousins Tabitha and Haley Beaugez who said, "They just liked stopped and it was everybody started freaking out cause they were just standing there and ripped their shirts off, it was crazy, yes it was awesome!"

A lot of local businesses like Target are partners with United Way and fully supported this "flash mob with a message".

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
