ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A man is expected to be released from an East Texas prison this week, then go back behind bars on new charges.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Jason Clark tells KLTV 28-year-old Eric Neil will be facing new charges for assault on a public servant.

Neil is accused of assaulting a corrections officer at the Coffield Unit in Anderson County last month. The officer was taken to a Palestine hospital where they received stitches and then released.

The incident was forwarded on to the TDCJ's Office of Inspector General then on to the Special Prosecution Unit. Neil's new case was presented before a grand jury and Anderson County Sheriff's deputies filed a detainer Wednesday.

According to Clark, Neil will be taken to Huntsville for processing out of the prison system, but instead of being fully released he will be handed over to Anderson County deputies to face those new charges.

Once he is back in Anderson County, Neil will have the option of posting bond or remaining in custody until his trial.

Neil was serving time in the Coffield Unit for two aggravated robberies in 2002 out of Harris County.
