New Diana teacher died from self-inflicted gunshot wound

UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Officials with the Upshur County Sheriff's Office say a New Diana teacher died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say based on the evidence at the scene and preliminary autopsy results, they determined David Gross died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gross was found dead inside his Union Grove home Friday afternoon.

In an interview on Friday, New Diana Superintendent Joyce W. Sloan said she heard that teacher David Gross was shot after entering his home in the Union Grove area. Sloan also said she heard an intruder was inside the home.

Until Wednesday morning, Upshur County authorities have remained tight-lipped about the investigation, only confirming Gross died from a single gunshot wound.

Gross taught Ag Sciences at New Diana High School and was scheduled to attend an FFA event last Friday, the day he died.

Gross' funeral was held Tuesday afternoon.
