LeTourneau students spend spring break serving, not partying

It's that time of year again, when millions of college students will be going on spring break.

While many will hit sun-soaked beaches, a group of East Texas students will use the time to serve others.

With an opening prayer for safe journey, over 100 LeTourneau University students gathered their traveling bags and assorted items into rental vehicles, preparing to scatter across the country.

Student Amy Weaver said, "We're going to spread the gospel, and we're going out all over America to be ambassadors for Christ."

Teams will be going as far as Utah to Ohio to the Carolinas to share their faith and work to better the communities they visit, holding youth camps and building homes for those in need.

"We are going to be sending a team down to south Texas and they are going to be building a home for a family currently homeless. Engineering and aviation down to building homes and running sports camps."

"We're not there to just thump Bibles on people's heads; we're actually there to build relationships with people and help them where we can," said fellow student James Hilbush.

They will take only what they need, with necessities like pillows.

"It's one of those little comfort things, but the trip will still be great," says David Connally, who is going to Columbia, South America.

Childish, a LETU junior from Alaska, said he looks forward to, "Doing some community service project going to work getting to know other students.

"It's just a complete privilege, it really is," Weaver said.

And ultimately, they'll come back with more than just a walk on the beach.
