Wenstrup beats incumbent Schmidt for Republican nomination

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Republicans and Democrats in Southwest Ohio are looking at a completely new ticket in the 2nd District for the United States Congress.

Incumbent Rep. Jean Schmidt was defeated Tuesday night in the Ohio primary by newcomer Lt. Col. Brad Wenstrup.

You might remember Wenstrup from his 2009 campaign against Mayor Mark Mallory.

Even though he lost, Wenstrup made a strong impact on the Republican party as well as his appeal as a candidate.

"We were surprised. We knew Congresswoman Schmidt had great support here but those of us that know Dr. Wenstrup know he is a terrific candidate," says Alex Triantafilou, the Republican Chair for Hamilton County.

Wenstrup is an active reserve officer in the Army National Guard, a doctor and a small business owner.

In response to her loss, Rep. Jean Schmidt released this statement:

"I want to thank everyone who supported me since I became the first woman elected to represent Southern Ohio in Congress in 2005. I want to thank them for their friendship. I want to thank them for their faith in me. I called Brad Wenstrup to congratulate him, but couldn't reach him. I left a message on his voice mail. I said: "Congratulations. I wish you the best. God bless." We are Republicans, and we have to move forward in November. I will continue to work hard through the end of this year to represent the interests and the conservative values of the people of Southern Ohio. I will continue to be their strong voice in our nation's capital."

Wenstrup says he is ready for the next step in his campaign and thinks he is best choice to represent Southwest Ohio.

"I want to go up to Washington and really lead and advise and be a part of the solutions, that's really going to be the key," says Wenstrup.

Wenstrup is running against Democrat William Smith who marginally beat David Krikorian in the primary. Krikorian conceded the race Wednesday afternoon.
