No backing down for East Texas gymnast

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Balancing on a beam.  Flipping upside down.  Swinging on uneven bars.  Nothing scares 13 year old Ceilie Crawford. Nothing but life without gymnastics.

"I'm really scared that I'm not going to be able to do as much as a I do now," said Crawford.

Crawford has scoliosis, an abnormal curve in her spine.

"If it gets anymore crooked then it might damage my heart and lungs," said Crawford.

Surgery will be required. A rod will be placed in Crawford's upper back, keeping her out at least 6 months.

"I was in tears that night her mother told me," said Texas East Gymnastics assistant coach Beth Wilcox.  "I was devastated about taking something away from this little girl that loves and is so passionate about the sport."

Doctors wanted to perform the surgery this month.  Crawford is putting it on hold so she can compete at this weekends Rose City Classic and attend a gymnastics camp with former U.S. Olympic coach Bela Karoyli.

"I'm really nervous because I really want to do this in college," said Crawford.

Doctors have told Crawford she has a good chance to continue the sport she loves.  There are no guarantees.

"If she gets another chance after this more power to her," said Wilcox.  "She'll always be apart of our family. This is her hurrah."

With the smallest enrollment in District 17-5A, and really across the entire classification, Lindale could use that as an excuse for a sub-par season. But under defensive coordinator, turned head coach Chris Cochran, that won't be the case.
