White Oak community celebrating state berth

WHITE OAK, TEXAS (KLTV) - At exactly 4:00 p.m. on Monday, tickets for the state tournament went on sale in White Oak.

30 minutes later, they were gone.

These tickets aren't to just any basketball game.

These tickets are a part of White oak history.

"Pandemonium, it has just been crazy," said Dana Mizell, a 1980 White Oak graduate, "It is amazing that we have always been as one and this just brings us together even more."

Roughneck fans lined the hallways at the high school today, buying tickets for the state tournament.

Among them was Fred Sutton, a graduate of White Oak in 1959, which happens to be the last time they made it to state.

"I have had two, believe me, call me in the last two days, saying that they still cant believe it," said Sutton, "And I told them that it was true, and I was like 'yeah, we are going.'"

"It is just a dream come true for the kids and the parents, the faculty and for everyone here in White Oak," said Tim Harris, a 1981 graduate.

Across the city, they are celebrating their trip to state, signs of support almost everywhere, having waited more than half a century to get there.

"It means everything, I have been going to the state tournament off and on for the last 30 years," said Harris, "And to finally get to see my team in the tournament, it is going to be good for the city."

Good for the city, great for the White Oak alumni, who will come from all over to witness their school on the biggest stage.

"This is not only town deep, I just heard of an alumni that is flying in from Wisconsin for this," said Mizell, "This goes all across, every alumni of White oak feels like they are a part of this."

The 2nd ranked Roughnecks will play #1 Idalou in the state semi-finals on Friday in Austin.

Tip-off is at 10:00 A.M. from the Erwin Center.
