SPCA of Texas granted custody of fighting roosters and hens

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Monday morning, the SPCA received custody of more than twenty birds that were used for illegal cockfighting in Van Zandt Count.

We first told you about this story last week, when authorities investigated the death of an Athens man who was shot while attending the cockfight.

Van Zandt County authorities tell us they have no further leads on who killed 21-year-old Luis Rodriguez from Athens.

When police went to the scene of the shooting, they found 17 hens, ten fighting roosters and eighty eggs. Law enforcement asked the SPCA of Texas to take care of those birds until the hearing in Ben Wheeler on Monday.

The SPCA of Texas told us if the animal owner does not file an appeal in the next ten days, the organization will individually evaluate the birds and chicks from any hatched eggs for adoption or placement on a case by case basis.

Van Zandt County authorities ask if you have any information on this case to please contact CrimeStoppers.
