East Texans celebrate Texas Independence Day

For 176 years, East Texans have been celebrating this day as their Independence Day. On this day in 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico.

March 2nd is also known as Flag Day, and Sam Houston Day,a day of victory for Texas.

Don Gipson celebrates by setting up a line of flags,"Hopefully, it causes one to pause and remember all the sacrifices that were made in order for us to get from Spain to where we are today," says Gipson.

Gipson says these are all the flags that flew over Texas: Spain, France,Mexico, Flag of the Alamo, and The Republic of Texas are just a few.

"You set them up here like this, and the winds blowing they look like they're coming to life," says Gipson.

In other areas of East Texas, BBQ is a way to celebrate Texas freedom.

In honor of Texas Independence Day, Rudy's is offering thirty-two cents for every quarter pound of brisket, all in effort to help out the volunteer firefighters across the state of Texas.

All the Rudy's across the state participated in the fundraiser today.

"The recent Texas fires that happened over the summer, they worked overtime, volunteers and things like that so anyway we can give back and show support in mass numbers would be great for them, because they do so much for us," says one of Rudy's customers.

So whether it's flags, BBQ, or giving donations, it's our day to celebrate freedom.

The money that was donated today at Rudy's will be given directly to the Texas Wildfire Relief Fund.
