SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The Shelby County District Attorney's Office will seek the death penalty for a Center man accused of shooting and killing his wife and stepson in October.

Richard Vaughn Dean, 40, was arraigned on capital murder charges Friday. Dean entered a plea of not guilty. His jury selection date is set for Nov. 26.

According to acting District Attorney Kenneth Florence, the state has already filed a notice of intention to seek the death penalty for Dean.

According to a previous report, Sheriff Newton Johnson said deputies were called to a property on State Highway 147, just outside of Shelbyville around 6 p.m. on Oct. 19.

When deputies arrived, they found Vicky Lynn Dean, 37, in a pickup, dead from an apparent shotgun wound to the face. Johnson said it appeared she was trying to leave the property.

Her son Christopher Reagan Smith, 20, was found dead in a small building outside the house, Johnson said.

Johnson said while deputies were on the scene, the San Augustine Sheriff's Department contacted them and said Dean's husband, Richard Dean, turned himself in and confessed to killing his wife and stepson.
