Two Bodies Found In Upshur County Pond

A gruesome discovery for some East Texas fishermen.  Last night, they found two bodies in a pond near an abandoned home.  It's about 10 miles northeast of Gilmer near Highway 155.

Sheriff's deputies say the bodies were found around 5:00 p.m. yesterday . "Sheriffs deputies responded to the scene and discovered the bodies and from evidence collected at the scene we determined it was a double homicide," says Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton.

The men were in their mid 30's and had no identification on them. Investigators say they don't believe the men were from the area and could have been in the pond for a couple of weeks. Many who live and work in the area have been leery of the abandoned home, suspecting that it has been a site of drug activity.

"I guess the first thing I think of is my family, my kids growing up in this town, first reaction to me is drugs," said area resident Brian Gowan. Neighbors say there were no shots heard and no one appears to have seen anyone in the area, leaving officials hoping that identifying the victims may give them a clue as to how they were killed.

"Hoping to find out who they are, and maybe that will give us some leads," Betterton says. The bodies have been sen to Dallas for autopsy.
