'Today you are You': ETX library says happy birthday to Dr. Seuss

"Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You."

Dr. Seuss would have been 108 Friday, and officials at Tyler's Public Library are hosting big parties to celebrate.

They say Dr. Seuss is so special because he gives children one of the greatest gifts of all -- the gift of reading.

"We are happy to say happy birthday to Dr. Seuss. If he lived still, he would be 108 today, and Dr. Seuss has left a legacy of books that just thrill us," says Evelyn McLane, the Tyler Public Library's Programming Associate.

Books like "Green Eggs and Ham" that have characters, like Sam I Am, that leap off the page.

"Dr. Seuss just has a way with words and a way with images that grab children and entertain adults as well," McLane says. "And I think that's why he's been so successful and so long-lived in people's enjoyment and enthusiasm."

McLane says Seuss had the unique ability of helping kids to love reading by writing books that they could read and that were fun to read.

"All of his work is great. It's silly, but it often has a message. But I think his legacy is in getting kids excited about reading," she says.

McLane says one of the great things about Dr. Seuss's books is that kids can play along while she reads.

"If I read "Green Eggs and Ham" or if I read "Ten Apples Up on Top" or if we read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," the kids yell it out along with me. They love it," McLane says. "They love the rhymes. That's always the first thing they say, they go, rhyming words, rhyming words. And that's a language development skill, and that's such a wonderful thing."

And McLane says that so many of those skills, like language development and reading comprehension, are essential to our everyday lives, and a lot of them we can credit to Dr. Seuss -- and that's why we're still celebrating him 108 years later.

The Tyler Public Library is hosting their birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
