Kindness and compassion of E. Texas stretches around the globe

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) -

East Texans are quick to help each other in time of need. Now, that help is extending all the way to Africa.

Thursday, the Sierra Leone Ambassador to the United States spoke to board members at Mercy Ships about the healthcare needs in their small African country.

Sierra Leone was ravaged by civil war and many of it's hospital were destroyed.

Now, even the smallest health concerns grow in to life-threatening conditions.

"Even the very basic needs that--when left unattended, gradually get worse, and worse and worse," said Dr. Glenn Strauss with Help Me See.

But, Mercy Ships helps to change that. One of their tools is Africa Mercy, a floating hospital the size of a medical center. The ship provides the same standard of medical care found in East Texas.

And, this medical care changes the lives of those in Sierra Leone.  Something that Ambassador Bockari Stephens says makes East Texas stand out.

"It shows that people in this part of the world think about others," Bockari said.
