Cockfight shooter on the loose after killing ETX man

ATHENS, TX (KLTV) -

Authorities are looking for the person who shot and killed 21-year-old Luis

Rodriguez. Rodriguez was killed during an illegal cockfight that was put on just north of Athens, near the Henderson-Van Zandt county line.

"Everybody deserves justice whether they be a suspect one day and a victim the next," said Van Zandt County Investigator, Sam Mayer.

But so far, police have not been able to give Luis Rodriguez that justice.

Police told us several people gathered at a house off of FM 1861 for an illegal chicken fight.
Some time later, a fight broke out in the crowd, and shots were fired.

One of those shots killed Rodriguez.

"We haven't pinpointed a reason why this happened, but we do know when things are going on like that, certain things seem to follow," Mayer explained.

Police have a few leads, but no so far, no suspect.

"Surrounding an atmosphere like this there's a lot of nicknames, a lot of things people are not for sure of; we're trying to run some of those things down and try to better hone in on a person of interest," Rodriguez said.

Maura Davis, the Vice President of Communications at SPCA of Texas told us while police continue their investigation, the SPCA is taking care of the animals.

"The SPCA of Texas removed 27 birds and 80 eggs. Among those birds were 17 hens and 10 fighting roosters," Davis told us.

Fighting paraphernalia, cash and alcohol were all found at the location. When you find that kind of mix,"You never know what's going to happen," Mayer said.
