Inmate fights correctional officer, could face more charges

An inmate at the Coffield Unit near Tennessee Colony could be facing more charges after reportedly assaulting a corrections officer.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Jason Clark said 28-year-old Eric Neil was being moved out of his cell Wednesday when he slipped out of his hand restraints.

Clark said Neil then began assaulting the officer. Additional staff responded to help the officer and used pepper spray to bring Neil back into custody.

The corrections officer was taken to a Palestine hospital where they received stitches.

Neil has been placed into pre-hearing detention and could face charges of assaulting an officer.

According to TDCJ records, Neil has been at the Coffield unit serving two ten-year sentences for an aggravated robbery in 2002 and a 180 day sentence for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in 2001. Both crimes were committed in Harris County.

Neil is scheduled to be released mid-March for those sentences. He could be re-arrested if an Anderson County Grand Jury finds he could be charged with assaulting the corrections officer.
