ETX ministry offers weekend 5K, Fun Run to build local home

One local organization is hosting a 5K this weekend for a good cause, and they want you to know you can still get involved.

The newly-formed Proverbs 19:17 Ministries in Lindale is hosting its first Home Run 5K this weekend to help raise funds for a home-build that's about to start for a Lindale family.

But this organization is about more than just hosting a race. That verse that's at the center of their ministry -- Proverbs 19:17 -- is challenging a group of people to change its community, one home at a time.

"It just talks specifically about he who gives to the poor lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his deeds," said Proverbs 19:17 Ministries Chair Lesa Bell.

Bell's friend Heather Harris and her family were living in a mobile home that had holes in the floor and mold on the walls.

So Bell enlisted Lindale builder Bill Andreason to help build the Harris family a new home.

"The project is all about getting them into a home that's a safe environment. The home that they were living in was really beyond repair," Andreason said.

Construction on a new energy efficient home for the Harrises will start in about 2 weeks, but the project helped launch Proverbs 19:17 Ministries to help other hardworking families who need new homes.

"Well I think most of it is just helping people that are working. The family that we're helping out, they both work. They just didn't have the means to improve where they were living," Bell said.

And for Andreason, it's only natural to start building homes not-for-profit.

"We've built a lot of homes here locally and we just felt that this was our way to start giving back to the community," he said.

And whether it's by participating in a family-fun 5K or volunteering on a build site, "The ministry provides for other people in the community to get involved to help build it, to help provide the money, and that's just a neat thing to bring the community together and really just bring honor to the Lord in doing it," Bell said.

Proverbs 19:17 Ministries wants to build one home for a needy family each year.

If you'd like to help them raise money for the Harris family's home this weekend, the Home Run 5K starts at 9 am Saturday morning at Faulkner Park in Lindale. Admission is $25 and includes a t-shirt.

A fun run for children 12 and under starts at 8 am. Admission is $5 with adult participation or $10 without, and includes a t-shirt.
