Sheriff Voted Out In Rusk County

Stunned. That's the only way to describe the feeling among employees of the Rusk County Sheriff's Department after the man who had led them for eight years was defeated in Tuesday's primary. After overwhelmingly being elected to two terms, Sheriff James Stroud was defeated by relative newcomer fellow republican Glen Deason.

"I don't know, I was really surprised, too.  Why it happened now, I'm not sure, but I know it's for the best," said Stroud. He accepts his loss, but is now worried about his employees, and an uncertain future with a new administration.

"I'm concerned for them and their families and what the future has for them," he says. Stroud refuses to speculate on what went wrong, just focusing on what he leaves behind.

"Being honest and having integrity and showing compassion, those are words that have been redefined and redefined but I know what they mean to me, that's been first and foremost and that's what I've tried to do as sheriff," says Stroud.

Deason will face Democrat Ricky Turner in the general election in November. Bob Hallmark, reporting .
